Tesla launches cheaper RWD Model Y in China


On July 8, 2021, Tesla officially launched the cheaper RWD Model Y in China. The new price is 27,600, which decreased 71,900 yuan from its’ old price, which is about 42,600 US dollars and it is even cheaper than US market price. The range reduced a little bit but not too much and the overall power and function did not change a lot, which make Model Y a really competitive electric car or even a game changer in Chinese electric car market.

Elon musk once said that he never wants to be a BMW or Benz in electric car market but a Toyota, and he is trying to do it. Not replying on the high prices or high profit of each car, he lowered all the tesla to get more market shares.

There are still lots of challenges that Tesla need to overcome, like making the products details better and improve their battery life and autopilot more reliable. Battery life seems like a common problem for all the electric car companies, and it may still take years for them to get the breakthrough. Tesla has been leading the autopilot technology but still need more time to make it perfect. One thing they can make their product better is the cars' details, like smaller gap between windows or better material for the interior, which their competition is doing better.

Tesla do not have PR because Musk think it is the waste of time and money, so what they do is just updating their website and people find out their new products, which is not quite official for their new products but do save lots of people and money to deal with media stuff on the other hand.

I think that their marketing strategy is okay but not perfect. Using the lower price to take over more market share is sure a good move, because only by controlling more market, you can set the rules for this market which would lead more money for the company. But no PR at all may not be so smart, because nowadays people do talk about everything on media, one official launch or introduction can be really helpful for people to know better. If I am Elon Musk, I will keep my PR team but try to keep it small. I understand he is trying to focus on the products but keeping good relationship with people or the market is also important for the company and the customers. 

Overall, I think the cheaper version Model Y is going to change the Chinese electric car market, where some companies may die and some may improve their products, which will be better for the customers. As a Chinese, I hope that our companies could survive this and get better, which will give us a more colorful market. I also hope that Tesla can also make their electric cars better and cheaper that more and more people can afford it.
